What is marine gas oil?

Marine gas oil is a robust type of fuel oil used to power ships, boats and other marine vessels with diesel engines. The fuel has many names, including bunker fuel, bunker oil, heavy fuel oil, marine fuels and intermediate fuel oil – and also many variants in quality.

The different types of bunker oil are distillate fuels, residual fuels, and a mixture of the two – intermediate. Distillate fuels are commonly called ‘marine gas oil’, residual fuels called ‘marine fuel oil’ or ‘residual fuel oil’, and intermediate types called ‘marine diesel fuel’. Marine gas oil is the highest class of marine fuel, with the lowest concentration of sulphur and particulate content.

Marine gas oil sulphur content: new 2020 IMO regulation

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has announced a 0.50% global sulphur cap on marine fuel emissions that will be executed in 2020. Ships must use marine fuels that have a sulphur content of less than 0.50% to reduce the amount of harmful emissions in the atmosphere.

The move will generate a significant change in fuel choice. High sulphur heavy fuel oil (HSFO) will only be permitted to be used in a vessel if there is an exhaust gas scrubber system installed.

Is marine gas oil diesel?

Marine diesel is similar to diesel fuel but it has a higher density. Marine diesel oil (MDO) usually refers to marine fuels that are made up of different blends of distillates (called marine gas oil) and heavy fuel oil. Marine diesel is not a pure distillate, unlike those fuels used in vehicles on land.
