What is HVO fuel?

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO fuel) is a second-generation biofuel that is a fully renewable and biodegradable alternative to diesel, which is why it’s often referred to as “renewable diesel.” HVO fuel is made from certified sustainable materials and shares almost identical chemical properties to diesel, allowing it to be used as a drop-in alternative while reducing net CO2 emissions by up to 90%.

Part of the paraffinic family of fuels, HVO has a wide range of OEM approvals making it suitable for existing vehicle fleets, equipment and machinery without making any changes to your operations and infrastructure. This makes HVO fuel a cost-effective way to make significant reductions in your fuels’ net CO2 emissions by removing the need for investment in new equipment or vehicles.

How is HVO fuel made?

The advanced renewable diesel fuel is derived from 100% renewable waste streams through hydrotreatment and isomerisation. It meets bio content requirements with no FAME included and avoids the instability and operability issues seen by many low blend diesels and high blend biofuels.

HVO fuel benefits

HVO fuel provides many tangible benefits to businesses when compared to diesel and first-generation biofuels thanks to its superior features including:

  • Made from 100% renewable raw materials – significantly reduces net CO2 emissions by up to 90%
  • A direct replacement for your current diesel – no need to change existing equipment or vehicles
  • FAME-free, fossil-free and sulphur-free – Fewer filter changes, lower maintenance costs and no more diesel bug
  • Shelf life of up to 10 years – perfect for long-term bulk storage
  • Cleaner burning fuel – free from aromatics and sulphur, reducing particulate production during combustion and providing a more efficient burn
  • A Cold filter plugging point (CFPP) of up to -27oC – providing exceptional year-round performance
  • Adheres to EN 15940 standards and Fuel Quality Directive 2009/30/EC Annex II

HVO fuel FAQs

Is HVO fuel the same as biodiesel?

No! HVO fuel is a second-generation biofuel that innovates on biodiesel and other first-generation biofuels. While HVO is made from 100% bio content, it’s completely FAME-free meaning that it has none of the operational issues that first-generation biofuels face such as a short storage lifespan and poor cold weather performance. HVO is 100% hydrocarbon with consistent molecules, meaning that it’s not hydrophilic and there’s is a far lower risk of bio contamination than in fuels that contain FAME.

HVO is an extremely clean fuel. Apart from being 100% hydrocarbon (0% oxygen) and made from 100% renewable raw materials, it is produced using a highly controlled hydrogenation and isomerisation process, which removes all impurities from the fuel. This results in a greatly extended lifespan, easier maintenance for storing your fuel, and a clean-burning fuel which can help lower your carbon footprint.

In addition, the cetane level in HVO fuel is much higher than that of regular diesel; regular diesel has a cetane of around 51, and HVO has a cetane number greater than 70.

What are the specifications of HVO fuel?

Our HVO meets EN15940 and is approved by a vast range of engine manufacturers. It contains zero FAME, sulphur and fossil content, providing cleaner combustion, reduced particulate matter and exceptional cold weather performance.

Cetane levels are an indicator of how readily and completely the fuel will burn in the combustion chamber, and a higher cetane level means the faster the fuel will ignite, the more completely it will burn. This is important because if fuel burns faster in the combustion chamber, the engine will experience greater performance and produce fewer harmful emissions.

The chemical structure of HVO imparts fantastic low-temperature stability, allowing it to be used in arctic conditions without any difficulty.

What is the price of HVO fuel?

The price of HVO fuel per litre is typically more than diesel, though when factoring in the long-term benefits of HVO fuel it’s more cost effective as it will lower maintenance costs due to there being less risk of fuel degradation.

For businesses looking to lower the environmental impact of their fuel consumption, HVO fuel is a no brainer as it reduces net CO2 emissions without you having to make any operational changes or any investment into new equipment, vehicles or machinery.

Do I need to remove my diesel before switching to HVO fuel?

No, HVO fuel is completely miscible with regular diesel meaning you can top up your tanks with HVO today. However, if you’d like to reap the full benefits of HVO, we recommend taking advantage of our fuel uplift service to remove your current fuel first. We’ll then clean your fuel tank and replace it with HVO, so you can maximise all of HVO’s most desirable qualities.

Is HVO fuel OEM approved?

HVO fuel is OEM approved by several global companies and passenger car manufacturers, meaning it can be used in heavy-duty road vehicles such as articulated lorries as well as many off-road vehicles such as tractors, construction vehicles & more. These include, but are not limited to:

Heavy Duty Road VehiclesPassenger CarsNon-road use
