What is white diesel (DERV)?

DERV, an acronym for Diesel Engine Road Vehicle, which is a common term used for diesel, is the standard fuel you can find in road vehicles such as cars, vans, trucks or articulated vehicles.

This fuel is also known as “taxed diesel” as it carries the standard 20% VAT, as opposed to red diesel (gas oil) which is a rebated fuel.

Red diesel carries a much lower tax rate of just 5% in most cases and is therefore illegal to use in road going vehicles. However, this is set to change for many industries from 1 April 2022. Read more on this in our article on the red diesel eligibility changes.
